WIND Launches in Calgary

CALGARY – December 18, 2009 – WIND Mobile, a subsidiary of Globalive Holdings, officially launched in Calgary today, opening retail locations across the city. The mobile company made history this week by becoming the newest national wireless provider to launch in Canada in over a decade.

As a part of the official launch, WIND Mobile unveiled an 8-foot monument outside the 17th Avenue store location as a tribute to the tens of thousands of Canadians whose conversations helped to shape Canada’s first truly competitive wireless alternative. WIND Mobile stores opened yesterday in the Greater Toronto Area and plans to roll out in Vancouver, Ottawa and Edmonton in the new year. Outside of its coverage area it will provide national coverage through a roaming agreement.

“Today marks a new chapter for wireless in Canada,” said Anthony Lacavera, Chairman of Globalive and WIND Mobile. “Thank you to the thousands of Canadians who have helped us to build WIND Mobile. We’ve listened to those conversations, and now we’re very proud to announce our offerings as a direct result of all the feedback. WIND is Canada’s company. Built by Canadians, for Canadians.”

The WIND brand was created with the input of an overwhelming response from the public. For over a year, Canadians were engaged in conversation through Globalive’s online Wireless Soapbox campaign as well as the WINDmobile.ca site – becoming vehicles for Canada’s wireless revolution.

“We’ve heard from Canadians that they want value, honesty and simplicity,” said Ken Campbell, CEO of WIND Mobile. “We’ve heard overwhelmingly that they’re tired of high prices, poor service, limited technology, and complicated billing. They are tired of system access fees and contracts. Today, we’re thrilled to respond to all this feedback by presenting WIND Mobile – a company that is entirely focused on delivering an exceptional customer experience.”

The WIND Mobile experience will include the following features:

  • No activation fees
  • No contracts on any services
  • No system access fees
  • No fees for Enhanced 911 services

Coverage around Calgary is a kind of joke. Visiting friends in Bridlewood eqals being charged extra for every incoming/outgoing minute. Another thing: minimum data plan with e-mail support is $35. Is that the cheaper service for Canadians? I'm using around 150MB / mth so why I need to pay for unlimited? I think I'll stay waiting for my provider's response to Wind offer. They won't stay doing nothing.

So when is Wind going to launch in Calgary? The coverage shown is nothing more than a breeze of hot air and certainly doesn't constitute 'launch'. Customers are going to get seriously upset when they start getting roaming charges within City limits, never mind all the local communities. What a waste of time.

All I want is incoming and outgoing phone calls along with caller Id. I dont need or use text or Internet, or Voicemail etc. It doesnot show what the minutes are incoming or outcoming phone calls I assume its free included in the $15.00 plan( unlimited )as the web site doesnt specify,or in wind area or out wind area.cost. I noticed the coverage is not very good either. I see that this will spudder like the other cell phone companies, I dont think Wind Moblity is being upfront. I think I will stick with whom I have plus its less than $15.00. Caution in the wind with the new mobility company. I would probley get charged for roaming from evergreen in Calgary because it doesnt cover all of calgary even. Its kind of sad.

When are you going to have complete coverage in Calgary? There are a number of communities (mine for example) that are within city limits, but out of your "home" zone.

As well, what are WIND employees doing to make sure new customers know that even if they are in the city, they might not be in a coverage zone?

Wind Mobility is going to have to prove them self here in Calgary, I am aware that they have very limited Wind coverage in Alberta such as the other cell phone companies did when they started. It will be intresting when you get charged long distance or roaming charges when you make a phone call in some parts of Calgary. Calgary areas is not a 100% covered for Wind Mobility coverage. I think their phones are expensive for the type that you get. I think there are people out there with expensive phone that may not want to eat the cost to switch cell phone companies. This company is not proven with their network as yet. I think bell, rogers, telus, fido ,virgin etc will be more competitive with prices to have a possility to opt out Wind Out or limited them to there coverage because of networking and service are doing along with some of the cell phone towers they are renting . This company I see is doomed before they get both feet in. Many people are going to wait on the side lines to see what happens and I think Wind is toast.I am only being honest for people to think of some of these things before jumping in. I am not giving a sales pitch with all promises with this company just giving facts to think before doing. Ps 1 other thing that is important I wanted to add to this is no contract so they can increase there prices any time when and after you have bought the phone and have entered there terms.nothing is a locked in price. just something to think about. Hopefully Honest doesnt mind me adding this bit of info I thought was important.

For me the issue is number portability, fix that ASAP and I will switch, I already notified my carrier (Telus) that I am switching in a moths time...please make it so I don't have to call them back and say I'm staying with them.
