I took part in one regarding port blocking. That was back when the Olympics were still one (Feb?). About half a dozen customers participated in that issue. It took place by phone.

Data is huge. The only reason I do not own a smartphone is that data is prohibitavely expensive in Canada. Take the new Nokia N900, for example. What would be the poiint of purchasing this if you are slapped with $80/month for 5 GB of data, when other countries offer unlimited for $20 or less? And all data is not created equally. With netbooks, things like N900's, or data only tablet devices, users want full internet connections. All standard service ports should be open (80, 443, 5060, etc). I think many tech savvy individuals would want to use VoIP on ...

I also have a N900, and am using it at EGDE speeds on a competitor's service. I would love to unlock the true potential of this device on Wind. Is there a way to be a part of the beta test of Wind's service before they launch?! ;) As MaemoFan said, the N900 has flagship written all over it. It really is a great device.

FIDO actually. It is not bad for surfing and other net-centric services, but not that great for VoIP (Gizmo), as the latency is large. I am not sure if HSPA has better latency or if that is purposely controlled by Rogers/Fido to make VoIP unusable.

I thought of that, but I was told by an agent their that someone with a N900 tried that yesterday, and it did not work. I was willing to buy the USB stick as well so I could get the SIM card. But the bit of info he gave me on the person who tried yesterday caused me to walk out of the store extremely disappointed.

Excellent news! Thank you WIND! @WIND - will the in-store agents then allow us to test our devices with a 'Live' SIM card so that we can be sure our phones work? By this I mean, allowing us to test internet and voice. You need to officially publish your internet APN settings. Thanks so much for engaging Canadians in the conversation!

Interesting to see that you are now considering more than one data plan. I think there is also room for you to offer a $25 voice plan. Perhaps with 200 included minutes or so. As for data - $15 for 500MB (surf little), $25 for 2GB (surf more) and $35 unlimited (surf lots) makes sense to me.

All plans include Wind to Wind unlimited calling. IMO - that is better than any family plan. Usually a family is all on the same carrier, so in this case, with everyone on WIND - you can call for free.

-Per-second billing on the $15 plan is essential. -According to the coverage map, I should be in a Home zone at Downsview (Dufferin/401). However, when I scan GSM networks with my N900 at Downsview, I do not see Wind's network on a consistent basis. Is this area covered? -North Brampton - There appears to be a tower at the new Hospital, but both the coverage map and my own scanning indicate no coverage north of Bovaird Drive. When is this coming? -Try before you buy for people bringing their own phones to the WIND network - it would be nice ...

Also, with FIDO, you can buy extra minutes in 50 or 100 minute chunks for $5 and $10 respectively. This is a handy way of dealing with anticipated overage in the month. Some additional minutes add-on would be a swell addition to your offerings.

well. i live very close to the hospital. I cannot see the wind signal on my n900 when I scan in that area. I do not think they are using that one yet. I do see their signal in the BCC area though.

Its not all about price, plans, unlimited this or that. WIND has the right frequency for the N900. The incumbents do not. If coverage gets better in the GTA, I'll happily switch to WIND. But reports of poor 'home zone' coverage and mysterious 2010 rollouts leaves me very cautious to do so right now.

I have been scanning WIND coverage in Brampton, and it is not very good. A no-go for me. I will not switch until Brampton is better serviced by Wind. The coverage maps do not tell thee real story.

@zane9 - I realize there are lots of problems, and yes, they have to make concrete moves in certain areas to succeed. I am trying to get some ideas into their heads on how the community can help them. Coverage and network issues are rampant right now - they need some mechanism for customers to report issues.

it is not consistent. I can see the hospital from where I live. I do not have wind servixce yet, but I regularly scan their network coverage with my n900. It shows up all day today, but hasn't for the previous few days, if not all week. It may be in testing. I think this tower or repeater is what will provide coverage to north of bovaird. The next closest is at bramalea city centre, which I am sure is too far to be picked up from here.

The n900 is very nice. I am still using my pre-production unit. But am waiting to switch to wind....they need to expand the northern limit of homezone coverage in the gta first.

FIDO Alberta coverage. Again, 3G network covers most of the Hwy 2 corridor, with a uncovered area around Red-Deer (no surprise ;) ) Grrrrrrr - so I will be paying for slow data on Wind. Usage case: Family is driving on a road trip to Ottawa, and wife/kids want to surf on my Wind phone. Grrrrrr!

Ouch! That is not a good experience at all. I am considering the move from Fido to WIND, and this post is giving me second thoughts. I wonder why the support staff did not call you back? And I just read from 'Wind Cares' that SIM cards are free with an activation of a plan on any phone you bring in... why did you have to pay for that SIM the second time around? Hmmm....

Well, I am trying to make an informed choice. Data roaming bugs me, as an AWS compatible phone will default to EDGE speeds on the Rogers network. So, I'll be paying for slow data? Thanks for posting this. This is almost 2010, Canadians are quite tech-savvy individuals. We expect better. Yes, there are teething problems. My biggest complaint in all this is the lack of acknowledgement from Wind on these serious service issues. And the lack of follow up on service tickets is not great for customer service. I am hopeful they will turn this around. But it seems like the company has been headless since the holidays began. Why so quiet?

the crtc decision was not based on their readiness, but rather, on their ownership structure. They are starting out, so I can understand the need for away zones. What is worrisome is that many customers are reporting their phones roaming to away mode within known home zones! That is unacceptable.

Their network stability requires immediate resolution. I summarized some problems people were having and asked for a response from their CTO. But nobody from Wind has answered. Most Europeans and Asians own unlocked GSM phones. It would be better for Wind to set up kiosks selling SIM cards in major airports. Most major European airports sell SIM cards. That would be revolutionary in Canada.

yes it does updates for apps and the OS over the air. No need for usb cables.

The nexus is not really revolutionary. With a phone like the n900 where skype and sIP are fully integrated into the device, you can already get by without a voice plan if you want to. Google is just typing up all the ends together in one google package. Surprising that they have been able to gather so much steam without piles of 'monopoly' allegations. Carriers will reduce to ISP's ... plain and simple. The writing is on the wall, just a matter of time.

I am on FIDO. No real issues, other than the data connection is slow due to the N900 having HSPA on the wrong frequencies for FIDO/Rogers. I've been with Maemo since 2007... it's come a long way.

I am retesting my N900 tomorrow at WIND's Bramalea store. Hopefully it works for my use cases (GTalk, SIP, FTP, SSH, etc). If they are still not working, then I will speak to Chris again. Yes, i have researched the mifi. It is available at Virgin and Bell atm. There is not a AWS version that Novatel makes yet. If T-Mobile has one in the works with Novatel, then we could benefit from that here.

Well, in the call we had as part of the Community Technical Advisory Team a few weeks ago, it was hinted that Wind may not be getting the N900 afterall. At least that is the takeaway I had. Other community members on that call would probably agree with me. Unfortunate too.... it is a great device. MeeGo is the mixing of Maemo and Intel's Moblin. What this likely means in the future is that any hardware vendor can use MeeGo on their devices. It will open up the OS to many more devices than Nokia could do alone. I am ...

With respect to the speed of the N900 vs others on Wind - it may be due to the cellular modem on those devices. The N900 has a very fast HSPA modem in it.

In the call we had with them a few weeks ago - they said they would not publish a list of ports that work. Instead, they seemed to like the idea I had of publishing a list of working apps for each of the phones they carry. we will see....

The SE website lists 3G 2100 MHz support but not 1700 MHz. Will this work at 3G speeds on Wind? Also, does it have BT-DUN support?

Wind has also started limited customer advisory teams for certain issues. Big kudos for that. Even if you do not bring Nexus One and N900 - please get them into the hands of your tech teams to get the issues sorted out - SIP on the N900, port blocks, etc. It is understandable you do not sell them, but people are bringing these phones to your network. Please get the studies doen quick and certify them for use on your network. I still am having SIP issues on the N900.

Use the network builder and lodge your complaint on reception there, please!

@WindyN900: I have not been able to place SIP calls (no audio), but receving them is fine. What settings are you using for the SIP client?

OpenVPN is using port 443 which should not be blocked. The problem appears to be related to switching the gateway. I hve a support request filed with the vpn provider as well.

And I found out that without some hacking OpenVPN does not work on a 3G connection on the N900. I am going to forward this 'idea' to Wind tech support since many of you provided detailed reports of why SIP is not working. Many thanks!

Yes, I got mine as well. I called Customer Service a few days ago, and was told to top up my pay-before account with my normal bill minus $30. Worked well. Thanks WIND! I am not sure about the Nexus One. But I have been in contact with WIND over the SIP issue for over a month now. It relates to their configuration of the NAT on their network. They told me last week that the fix is known, and will be deployed soon. I have a wait and see attitude now. I have worked together with them to get this resolved, and will ask again next week on a status update.

I think inter-city would be next. Wind was one of the new starts to win spectrum across the country

In theory, yes you can do this. In practice, no, not at the moment. There are data disconnects frequently, and SIP outgoing calls do not work. You will use data while connected if you have things like IM, SIP, Skype registered. Even if you are not surfing, as maintaining the registration on all your services requires a small amount of data. Idling without surfing or downloading shouldn't eat up much of your 5Gb bucket.

Yes, i am seeing something similar this week as well. The connection stays up almost indefinately now, but many times I have to reload a page a few times for it to load properly. Or, I have to manually disconnect the connection and reconnect. Stale IP?

I have noticed that high humidity causes my signal to degrade immensely when indoors. On a dry day, at the same indoor loocation, the signal is fine.

Really unimpressed with everything so far! I've has a problem with just about everything so far. If the company wasn't ready to withold a large amount of people, then it shouldn't have opened up for buisness. [N900 + OpenVPN]? Has anyone succesfully used OpenVPN on the N900 to get around the port blocks on the data plan? I am attempting that now, and getting an error that OpenVPN is not able to redirect the default gateway.

SIP / VOIP on Nexus One? Can anyone else confirm or deny this? Every post I read on this community these days seems to be from a frustrated user unable to get SIP / VOIP and other services like Fring to work. Can someone shed some light on the current state of using these services on a Nexus One???
