According to Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association market penetration of cellular phones in Canada for March 2009 was 67%. It's not holding the phone in your hand that matters, it's talking on the phone that is distracting. So it really makes no big difference whether this is hands free or not, unless of course you drive a standard... :) And then there are people (quite many actually) who talk holding the phone with the right hand to the left ear (or vice versa) - it looks funny and dangerous at the same time. OK, this is obviously disappointing but hardly unexpected. This is exactly what Bell/Rogers/Telus were aiming for from the start. So, what is the Wind Mobile strategy to deal with this situation?

Why do people rally behind this company? I think it is because Wind seems to be the only one (counting incumbents and the new entrants) that at least appears to be interested in what consumers want to have. Also, judging by the entries here, many people are fed up with prepackaged "plans" pushed at them where the the only common theme seems to be to get as much money from the consumer as possible. Finally the third, for me, would be that Wind is so far the most advanced in the process and still have (I hope) a chance to ...

I do live without a cell phone in Canada, even though I have one for when I'm visiting Europe. I would love to have one here too, but every time I review the offers of the current companies I feel like someone tries to take an advantage of me. Somehow I don't think I'm the only one like this....

Actually, does anybody has any insight why the CRTC is even involved in this at all? I know that this is the present state of affairs, but how did it come to be? I understand that CRTC regulates the radio, tv, etc. Canadian content, which is understandable with them being under the Department of Canadian Heritage. So, basically, mostly, they regulate the CONTENT. But what that has to do with the telephony??? This is a purely a technical field, no cultural issues involved. Unless of course, somebody was thinking at some time in the past to force English and French ...

I fully agree. The interface is clean and intuitive, the color scheme is pleasant, there is no jerking and jumping flash and gif animations, and it renders very nicely in Firefox :) Even the flash on your first page is kind of nice, which I admint with surprise because I hate any kind of animated content with a passion... unless I started the animation myself... So, congratulations to the designer and programmer, it's really rare to see a website that good.

Not at Futureshop or Best Buy of course, but if you google "dsl modem" you will have several hits from Canadian businesses selling them on-line. You can probably buy exactly the same model as you are renting. The modem/router will cost you around $50-$100 depending on number of connections and whether you want wireless for laptop or not.

More to the point - if I happen to be in Toronto and I sign up for your service/get the phone from you - would it work in Ottawa on your network? Your towers are less than kilometer from my house... :)

Yes, SIM cards, just SIM cards without the phones... don't see them in the offer. On the other hand I do understand that they have to generate some cash after all this waiting... nothing wrong with that, at least for the start...
