I've had friends who switched carriers because the latter offered to subsidize the former's ECF. That said, we're talking Big 3, so sure they have the cash. But while I don't expect WIND to pay every new customer $400, even just having a stunt promotion like "First 500 people to switch from Big 3 to WIND (with proof)" get the equivalent ECF amount subsidized would draw so much publicity and media coverage that WIND would attract many, many more customers.

Obviously there must be some sort of line to be drawn, because you're right, if I sign with Rogers tomorrow and WIND comes out the day after the Buyer's Remorse Period ends, it's definitely an uphill battle to argue. And even if they're really looking to hook in already-chained subscribers, they're not going for the newly-signed. They're going for the large bulk who are already signed up, and are itching to leave. Somewhat arbitrary, but I would say 18mo is the max to get subsidized. For example, if your contract still has... 18-12mo - ECF rebate of up to $240 ...

I wrote an extensive comment in my own thread (http://www.windmobile.ca/community/detail/2540/), but consider it an investment in a customer to subsidize (at least partially) his ECF. They don't need to spread the cost on all customers, it'll just take a bit more time to recoup the costs. I'm sure that they wouldn't need to worry about customers leaving given that a large amount of trust has been established on both sides with the ECF-subsidy.

But what I'm saying is that the untied subscribers have clearly already seen the incentive, which is why they'll be going to WIND. What I'm suggesting is to reel in, in addition to untied subscribers, the ones currently under contract. If WIND gets pushed back past Christmas, they are definitely going to need to consider subsidizing ECFs.

Don't accuse me of failing to understand what a contract is. (And if anything, you should scold Rogers...they seem to have a hard time understanding what it means to "honour the provisions of [a] contract.") But you're totally missing the point -- if WIND really wants to attract big business while proving to the Big 3 they're a force to be reckoned with, they will need to swallow the punch to their wallet and subsidize ECFs to get people to jump ship onto WIND. Why do you think the Big 3 is so eager to stall WIND past Christmas while ...

That's why you need an arbitrary limit, like 18mo left of contract like I suggested so that you don't sign with Rogers tomorrow and threaten to leave for WIND the next day. How many will actually wait 18mo to "take advantage" of WIND? First scenario: you're assuming Big 3 would actually drop their prices and plans to WIND's levels. And if they do that, WIND is screwed no matter what. Second scenario: what does WIND care what you do with your old phone? Rogers doesn't care if people sign three-years then sell their new iPhone for cash. Don't forget, WIND ...

Have a queue countdown, so customers know exactly many minutes until a CSR will take their call. And have the call-back option if customers find out they have to wait 30mins and don't want to.

It's clear then that the real question is whether subscribers will value WIND enough to stick with them for years, regardless of how the current Big 3 will attempt to woo them back. I argue for WIND subsidizing ECFs under the assumption that yes, indeed, subscribers will think "WIND has great customer service, whereas Rogellus don't, so I'm gonna stay even though I could leave anytime!" If WIND continues their community-focused mantra after launch, I'd be one of those people -- I switched from Rogers from Telus because of customer service, and I'll be doing the same now. I hope the media picks up on this, because it's been a while that any company (let alone the Big 3 telco giants) has done something so gracious for little in return. Just goes to show that it doesn't take much to connect with your neighbours, and we should all be doing it. It's great publicity for the brand and a testament to WIND's commitment to quality service -- to both customers and non-customers! Keep up the great work, can't wait to switch over.

I always ran under the assumption that each subscriber covered ONLY their own subsidy, I never actually considered that subsidy costs were shared amongst the collective subscribers. But since WIND here is MTM there probably won't be much subsidization, so perhaps it could be true that each subscriber could repay his own cost and not have to pay for the subsidy costs of others?

sl, that's a weird rumour...don't really understand the logic behind it, I thought sim cards were carrier-specific, that I couldn't bring my Rogers one to activate on WIND. Plus, they charge activation for new sim cards. Anyway, I almost bought a 9700 for full price but I heard a lot about defects, so I figured that it'd be way easier to replace if I buy from WIND (can't go back to Rogers and say "give me a new Bold even though I'm not your customer anymore!"). Plus, removing the little plastic cover that has the carrier logo on it voids ...

Johnn, youth today face unemployment rates of 20-25%; traditionally, we are the group least capable of affording necessities, let alone luxury goods. That's not to say we should encourage kids to spend more than they earn (heck...they just need to look to their parents for that behaviour), of course. However, you do have a point about charging seniors whatever. In a strict economic sense, businesses should pander most to customers who can be long-term; build a good relationship from the get-go with students and they can ensure decades of steady revenue. Of course Rogellus wouldn't object to Orascom getting a refund, it's not their money and it's a total sign of victory (for them). Johnn, I hope the best for you, and what I'd suggest is making a Google News alert of anything "Globalive/Orascom/WINDmobile" related so that you'd get emails when something does happen. ;) I, personally, remain firm in my excitement for WIND, and I continue to build my game plan to be the first customer in the door on opening day (though at a slower rate now since they're not launching Tuesday).

WIND has been fabulous in providing the customer service they promised. I get follow up calls here and there just to ensure that I'm still happy and that my issues have been addressed. To succeed, we need to work as a team -- don't just rely on WIND to improve flaws in their network, you need to call in to report weak or dead spots!

Expect new handset launches to coincide with new Home Zone launches. The N900 is ready, there's no reason to way. Besides, right now there are, what, 13 handsets compatible with AWS? Give it a few months.

That's key, PATIENCE! Don't sign with WIND unless you've got the patience to endure network/tech troubles, as well as calling in frequently to update bad coverage areas, etc. Good luck with your service!

They already offer this. If you're on a $45 Always Shout but halfway through the month you realize that you can't even do 100mins monthly, they will make immediate changes and prorate your payments. I don't know the specifics (call WIND) but I know for fact you can change anything, any time! :)

Personally speaking, I'm at York where for some reason they design even "technology" buildings to block cell signals effectively (facepalm), and WIND can do what Rogers can. Rogers can't necessarily do what WIND can, though in those areas (concrete rooms) WIND coverage is spotty at best.

I understand if front-line reps aren't as knowledgeable as actual tech support, but I sometimes feel like they can't do anything but sound cheerful. Which is a nice change from Rogers, for sure, but a smile doesn't help me lodge a complaint about WIND blocking ports. And we've heard horror stories of ignorant (sometimes offensive) reps who can't even properly explain the capabilities of their own network -- come on, WIND! I love WIND and I'm not switching anytime soon (if ever), but it pains me to see incompetent reps bring down the company's reputation.

Personally speaking, I'm at York where for some reason they design even "technology" buildings to block cell signals effectively (facepalm), and WIND can do what Rogers can. Rogers can't necessarily do what WIND can, though in those areas (concrete rooms) WIND coverage is spotty at best.

Um, NO actually if you want 3G. Emeer, check the FAQ and you'll see that WIND runs on the AWS 1700mHz network of which every single other existing Canadian carrier is NOT compatible with on 3G, therefore neither are their phones. So sure, you can bring your unlocked Rogers 9700, but you'll be stuck on crappy 2G EDGE, making the slow BB browser even slower...

Downtown, Whitby, Oshawa, Thornhill, Vaughan, North York, Scarborough are all good. York University is good, I can tell you that for sure. Actually, just about all of the GTA well within Home Zone is fine now, save for occasional cut-outs (very brief, you might get a dropped call or delayed SMS for example) and today's one-time outage (I doubt WIND will let it happen again). It would be great if we could assume two things: 1) WIND is hiring new people to build this app (for BlackBerry), because I don't think subscribers would be too happy knowing their tech support is working on an app to report bad coverage instead of fixing the bad coverage directly. 2) Massive trolling, all you need are a handful of troublemakers to report bad spots EVERYWHERE and WIND will waste all their time verifying spots that are are actually perfectly fine. What Trottie says may be right, but it's still a bit misleading -- 99% of my calls go through without a problem, and at least 90% of my calls don't get dropped. So if you need to speak with important, busy clients all the time, then wait it out to be perfectly safe -- otherwise, I'm sure your mom wouldn't mind you calling back right after IF you get dropped. :)

Trottie, I don't work for WIND, but I can tell you from personal experience that WIND has improved every day because I get fewer and fewer network cut-outs. Meanwhile, you base your unsubstantiated attacks of WIND on what you read -- guess what? Most people don't bother posting their wonderful experiences, people only speak up when they have problems. And what does returns vs activations have anything to do with this conversation, really? When chatting with WIND employees, they're completely open to potential and existing customers that WIND might not be for them if they don't have the patience for ...

Trottie, learn to spell iPhone properly please? Just goes to show how little you know about it. Apple is going to release an AWS-compatible iPhone for T-Mobile and WIND in probably Q3, since their exclusivity contract with AT&T will end soon. (They wouldn't make one now for WIND then use it on T-Mobile later, of course.) @techno2000, your iPhone 3G would merely be iPhone 2G on WIND - and technically, you'd be roaming on Rogers EDGE.

From the many conversations I've had with WIND employees (in-store, call centre reps, sales reps), it's apparent that WIND actively encourages them to be open and honest to the customer - letting some people know that WIND may not be for them (yet) and that they should wait, for example. With that mentality, I can't imagine it'd be worse to work at WIND than any other carrier. The only downside is that verbal abuse (hopefully not physical too) is rampant from subscribers unsympathetic to the fact that WIND is a brand-new company running a brand-new network.

Networkplanner, go apply to work in tech at WIND! If you know what you're doing, we (the subscribers) definitely need more than just friendly but not-too-helpful-at-times reps; we need an experienced technician. :)

Anyways, to OP: It's a good suggestion and I fully support it, but the current Canadian wireless environment can't handle it, they'd probably make much less money than they could by charging due to the fact that we're so accustomed to it. In terms of simple economics, if demand is inelastic, charging less/nothing results in nothing but less revenue.

@BrightBlue, if the tower's not active for some reason (or if there's NO tower at all...though I doubt that), it's more complicated than simply highlighting that spot with a mouse and saying "presto! Behold...coverage". I've called in numerous times to report dead spots and it takes about three days on average to resolve. Patience, my friend! :)

tsunawmi is right, you can find someone who has access to unlock codes or use a site like cellunlock.net (50% off: "crackb50"). Thought on second thought, I don't know about unlocking a Huawei...maybe you'll have to wait for WIND on that one! ;)

@Ted, like I've said on the FB page I'll copy paste it here: Subsidization leads to a more expensive phone in the long run -- you just appear to "save" in the short run. However, if you don't want to drop $450 outright for a BB at once, there's good news to be announced -- WIND is implementing a Koodo-like tab system where you can pay off your phone in set instalments (hopefully without interest, that would be very un-WIND-like), and if you decide to leave WIND the only thing you'd need to do is to dig up the remainder ...

And here's my research: From a new report on AWS here (http://www.gsmworld.com/newsroom/press-releases/2009/3448.htm), the spectrum is expected to achieve a 94%/annum growth until 2013 where subscriber-base will jump to over 177 million! And you're erroneously confusing the concept of "exclusivity" -- Apple isn't going to ditch AT&T for T-Mobile, or else "exclusivity" remains. Instead, like RIM's Bold 9700, they'll release multiple versions carrying different bands. For us Canadians, no one said anything about Apple dropping Rogellus for WIND -- plus, don't forget that Rogers and Bell have their OWN AWS spectrum yet to be deployed ...

Plus, WIND offers unlimited WIND-to-WIND nationwide, so get your friends and family to switch and you've got all the free talk time in the world. About the voicemail: I used to be against charging for voicemail too, but upon further thought it does cost them money to implement and maintain the system, which not everyone uses. As well, it's an easy way to make some cash given that they're only $500 billion in debt right now. :)

If you're getting bad coverage, you should call WIND instead of posting here because they'll be able to help you better. Personally, my coverage is fine most of the time...and zero problems outdoors in Toronto.

@johan, here's one reliable source: http://themobileninjas.com/2009/12/27/wind-to-start-tab-system/ @kEiThz, I was chatting with a rep yesterday and some people are actually buying phones in bulk and selling them to people who may not know better (like new immigrants with language barriers, for example), who then try to sign up with Rogers only to realize they've been duped. It's pretty despicable. Hence, WIND is considering (or has implemented already) a policy for BlackBerrys that they must come with a plan.

It's sad that most countries that are "less developed" than Canada can still offer free incoming, caller ID, etc. but our carriers don't for the most part. At the same time, Canada's penetration rates, low population density, and weak tech industries make it harder for carriers to do business here compared to other countries.

Hopefully by summer, I know some friends in Newmarket waiting. Also, I forgot to mention that the $10 Social BB is for BBs only...in case you didn't notice haha. The Bold is $450, but hopefully by summer they'll also have a tab system so you don't have it pay it all at once! (Or the new Pearl will come out at a cheaper price.)

Just ensure you've got lots of patience, Rogellus had a 20-year headstart and they STILL have network problems. ;) Otherwise, the reps are amazing and WIND is really a breath of fresh air from the other carriers.

singh, to be fair I think some of us are overly-defensive (or aggressive) because of the fact that there are real trolls or idiots here who demand the world and a half from WIND for the fraction of a penny, then raise an unnecessary ruckus and unfairly attempt to badmouth WIND to everyone they know. They'll offer a mid-level data plan soon, and none of the carriers offer BBM for free. As well, things such as wifi, App World, GPS, and Email are all blocked AT THE BEHEST OF RIM if you don't have a data plan.

If I'm not mistaken, WIND coverage extends east all the way to UOIT and whatever road it's on (I forget now)...when you're looking at "local" calling, simply look at whether you're INSIDE Home Zone when using your phone for voice/texting/data. I think most of Oshawa is covered so unless you live close to Bowmanville, you should be safe. That's the beauty of Home Zone...I can be in Mississauga or at school at York and still call home to Whitby for unlimited local. :D

I'd like to add my voice - again, for about the nth time - to the protest about WIND blocking ports and not admitting it, and not even telling their front-line reps that it's happening. Theoretically, 1900mHz signal penetration is weaker than 1700mHz, so you may be right that the WIND signal itself is weak. Let me add to the list: 1) Steadman Lecture Hall D (one bar, occasional cut-outs); 2) ACW south hallway (connecting to CFT, but CFT is fine). I can confirm that most of the locations there are consistently bad, but I don't know if it's a signal weakness or the fact that the buildings themselves are effectively blocking them for all cellphones.

@Arbalister, yes and no. Like I said you to in another thread, it's true that 99% of users aren't going to need access to FTP or SSH -- "whatever they are!" But tell them that they can't go on MSN to chat with their buddies, or listen to their favourite tunes on an online radio...then they'll understand why port blocking is unfair. There's a difference between "flooding" the forum and spamming -- flooding means that every individual user (and don't start making fake profiles!) posts the same message in protest, but spamming means that few of us post the same message many times in a day. Personally, I'm waiting for a little more feedback to edit/improve the message before I post DAY TWO myself.

Hmm you think if they open ports then it'd be a domino effect to resolve the rest? I agree that these are also serious issues, but it's hard to say "PORT BLOCKING/TRANSFER PER CONNECTION LIMIT OF 14MB/DROPPED TCP CONNECTIONS/NO PUBLIC IP ADDRESS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN" without people shutting off after the fourth word.

I only asked that supporters of the campaign re-post my message -- anything else, such as potential flaming, was not encouraged nor condoned. By re-posting the message, it sends a simple but effective message: to WIND, it forces them to visually the size of the protest. I don't like the last part about failing to afford a phone...plans end up being more expensive than the phone itself, if someone can't handle their finances enough to buy a phone, how can you expect them to be able to continue paying for the phone services?

I would LOVE to see WIND profit massively and whatnot, given that they ARE a business and I personally want to invest shares. But while good customer service is not mutually exclusive to a monopoly, there's always the temptation. Competition is NEVER a bad thing, it keeps people on their toes. BTW, glad to see that we're all becoming a friendly family again. :)

Refining my own comment: when I say "work", I mean "work on WIND's 3G network". You're welcome to bring your Rogers Bold 9700 if you want to roam for $0.25/minute on the Rogers EDGE network known as "WIND Away".

Thanks for being part of a positive campaign. Our goal is not to annoy, it's to raise awareness to everyone. Like I've said before, the fact that we've been debating this non-stop is a positive sign. WiseGuy, droidhacker, Arbalister, Canadianman, off-man, and everyone: let's remain civil! We are ALL on the same side, which is WIND's side. You can browse no problem. Anything else -- streaming media, apps, I don't think so. But I have no idea how HTC apps work (e.g. BlackBerrys use RIM's servers instead of WIND's).

According to WIND's plans (http://shop.windmobile.ca/ProductCatalog/VoicePlans/), the $15 Chat includes 100 anytime-province-wide minutes within Home Zone. You also get unlimited WIND-to-WIND calling when within Home Zone.

Trottie, you said that "your friends [sic] store" reported "14 returns" and "4 activations" the other day already, and possibly on other days. Hellooooo?! BTW, you're right that WIND isn't fair to block ports, but as if the Big 3 don't. And as it's been proven already, WIND actually listens to complaints, instead of the Big 3 interested in locking you down to a three-year. Go enjoy your mobile contract that gets changed at will, really go on!

I doubt there's a profitable market for year-long prepaid...the premise of such a feature is so that my mom, who makes 15c calls here and there, can use her phone when there's no landline available. Money is made on voice and data.

In your blog post, you need to clarify that only certain versions of a phone such as the Bold 9700 will work on WIND -- the AWS 1700mHz version, WIND or T-Mobile branded. You cannot use your Rogers 9700 on WIND's 3G.

Massonite, the apps are the most fun in the world!!! BB, Android have years to go before getting as good as the iPhone. @Canadianman, you're unlucky...I have a first-gen iPod touch from when it first came out, and it's so beat up but it's still solid.

BTW, unlocking doesn't affect the OS or any of your phone's settings. Also, Trottie, Rogers and Bell both have 1700 frequencies stored...which they have to use soon. Expect a 94%/annum growth of users on AWS handsets.

I see no problem with people making suggestions, but they do have to realize that WIND's existence isn't to provide charity services; they're here to make big money, too. The only things I cannot stress enough on forums regarding WIND and its services are such: 1) DON'T post questions about whether your Rogers/Bell/Telus/AT&T/Verizon/Sprint/etc branded phone will work on WIND - read the FAQ and you'll see that it won't! In fact, if it's not T-Mobile or WIND-branded, forget about it working. Most phones do not run on the AWS 1700mHz spectrum yet. 2) SEARCH the threads and forums before asking ...

I doubt the possibility of unlimited browsing for $10 is possible for BB users :(. Maybe you on your future AWS iPhone, but not the CrackBerry addicts. PS. I don't care about the flagging...it's completely lost its effectiveness now. After Massonite (Calgary's first customer, all over the media and put on a pedestal by WIND themselves) got flagged, that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

OP, if you're worried about switching so soon, I strongly suggest you stay on month-to-month after you contract ends. And even if they put up towers today, you'll probably expect at least a month of rough coverage.

Refining tkalamba's comments, ONLY a T-Mobile Bold 9700 would work with WIND, other than a WIND Bold 9700 itself. Always check the Bold 9700 you're holding to ensure it has "1700mHz" compatibility listed. Any Rogers/Bell/Telus/AT&T Bold 9700 will never work. FYI: existing iPhones DO NOT work on WIND, either.

WaitingForYears, um you do realize that using the feedback form goes to ONE person only, who can delete all the protest messages with a single click. And honestly, I don't see what the problem is with everyone posting their opinions that happen to be on the same boat for an issue close to their heart. If WIND decided to drop contracts on everyone right now, would you consider the thousands of angry customers posted all spammers and trolls?

We've set a precedent that any issues remaining with data, we can call the reps and they'll have a MUCH better idea of what we're talking about. Canadianman, thanks for playing a role in resolving this "inconvenience" -- it's a not if we're on the same side. Cheers, mate. ;)

In my entire political life, I have NEVER witnessed a campaign wrap up with flying colours in under 24 hours. I am very happy to see that WIND's shattered my expectations, just like they've shattered expectations (in only a positive way) about the customer experience in wireless communication. goug, this thread is going beyond the almost-resolved issue of port blocking. It's looking into the future when data issues are all eliminated, and WIND seriously considers how to market data. After some thought, I think my pricing would be $10/20/30/50.

Canadianman, I agree 110% -- I never wanted to start it in the first place! Plus, it's not like I will ever aspire to even know what SSH stands for. However, I did fought against port blocking on principle, knowing full well the controversy surrounding it, and I trusted our campaign to be able to channel that controversy into positive change...which it did! Like I said before, Chris wouldn't personally respond to spammers and trolls, but he did to us so it can only mean that our protest was legitimate. :) I hope that flooding the forums will never need ...

They want to learn from Toronto and Calgary; when WIND launches in Vancouver, you won't know it but it will be much, much more stable than what we guinea pigs in the Big Smoke experienced in the early days.

Can't wait to see Ottawa open, then have that Toronto-Ottawa link established! :) And I second JAWG's question -- for example, even right Downtown your Queen/Spadina location, which was rumoured to be a flagship store, isn't open yet. If plans are still in motion, that means WIND will be able to further contribute to a growing Canadian economy! :)

Shucks that you seem to have had a bad experience. I've been to the Oshawa location (having worked in the mall) and they seem very willing to assist customers. I have no idea why they said it'd take 4-6 weeks to get a refund, but I suggest calling WIND at 1-877-80-WIND-1 to have them look into it.

WIND is 3G only, and yes they will eventually upgrade to LTE. Probably in a couple years, since Sprint has only begun it recently.

To everyone responding with calls for a limited data plan, do you think it's fair that WIND charges overage, say at the current rate of $4/mb? Smellus mentioned the "paranoia" of constantly checking usage, and IMO WIND is trying to do away with that.

VM is a good money maker, though, and there are probably many who don't use it (unlike texting). But dropping the prices and including VM would be very smart, as most people just glance at plans instead of looking into them. A $40 plan competes directly on the surface with Public Mobile and Fido, and possibly others.

You can do what N900 suggests, but the important thing is that you call WIND *immediately* to notify them that you may have done some usage while stuck on WIND Away. It eliminates a hassle for everyone -- avoids WIND needing to manually sift through your account for possible roaming, and avoids you needing to call them frustrated after your phone bill arrives.

^haha nice name there. WIND's mantra is "we have three plans...and that's two too many". While they may offer additional data plans because only a tiny, tiny group would use over five gigs monthly, I don't think they have much intention of adding another voice. If you look at the marketing strategy, WIND specific designed the plans to bump you from the $15 to the $35 to the $45, all in one shot (if you want texting and voicemail, that is).

P.S. You posted at the same time I did, but re: landlines, they will never go away. Wireless services are just too unreliable with dropped calls and bad reception, etc., for all carriers. Plus, power outages don't affect landlines (you would need a corded phone).

Actually, OP raises a good question...is WIND-to-WIND unlimited no matter where you are (in Canada, to make a fair assumption) even if you're out of Home Zone? If not, why didn't they specify it if they've specified it for the other features? Furthermore, OP is right, why bother adding "WIND-to-WIND" if it's unlimited nationwide for all numbers anyway?

N900, it's what we know, but others might not. If you look at the plans, the other voice features are clearly marked "from any Home Zone". But why not the W2W feature?? Purely logically speaking, it implies W2W is unlimited anywhere.

When porting a number, the customer MUST ensure that he brings in a phone bill with his address and that the WIND employee types it out letter for letter -- if it's "Drive", "Dr" is NOT acceptable! A lot of people have gotten their numbers stuck because of this.

Where does Telus offer it for $5, or even $10? http://www.telusmobility.com/en/ON/mobile_packages/phonepackages.shtml Minimum $20 unless you're using FB Texts, which is just regular SMS, and it's still $15.

Wow so many comments, what a great conversation! @Sniper4u, if you read my entire comment (or better, blog post), you'll see that I'm not trying to be "elitist" -- which is a funny accusation because we're talking cellphone carriers here ;). (Saying WIND is the Louis Vuitton of carriers doesn't carry much clout hehe.) Obviously, WIND needs to build up a substantial subscriber base and make significant revenue to repay their debts first. But five/ten years down the line, perhaps sooner or later, WIND should seriously drop the outdated rat race of catering to the dwindling demographic of casual prepaid ...

P.S. Don't forget that Skype and Google Voice, and generally VOIP services, are exploding in popularity, thus eliminating the need for voice plans. As a result, ALL phones will need to be high-end smartphones to keep up with blazingly powerful LTE networks. See where I'm coming from, now? ;)

Haha I concur, my family's had LGs in the past and my girlfriend has one currently, and they get junked within a year. I had a friend who worked in Telus telling me that LGs are not built to last. It's not necessarily a bad thing (on WIND anywhere where you're not stuck in contract for three years), but there's a reason why manufacturers push out new phones every quarter.

I used a Sony Ericsson as well, and I would get dropped calls here and there (no big deal). What I strongly dislike about Rogers are two things: 1) Changing the terms of the contract with a blatantly dishonest "if we give you 30 days' notice, you can refuse the changes...but we're still carrying through with them" clause. 2) Singlehandedly offending a majority of its Chinese subscribers; I was heavily chastised by a retentions rep (oh, their customer service is a sadistic experience) for using a non-Rogers unlocked phone from Hong Kong because I was experiencing their network problems. HELLO, ...

That's exactly what I'm pushing for in my blog -- high-end handsets only, with high-end plans (especially data). Everyone's trying to find their niche, and WIND dabbling in a saturated low-end market (e.g. discount prepaid) isn't going to help them profit.

I'm all over the GTA from Mississauga to Oshawa, and overall it's great. Don't worry about getting no reception or a million dropped calls, because they don't exist anymore for the most part. Downtown Toronto is fairly solid, too, along the subway lines.

The best thing to defeat a troll is to avoid feeding it. Hopefully people do their research before picking the right carrier for them (or before doing anything, really) and are not easily swayed by inaccurate and misleading statements by people like Trottie. However, we mustn't forget that trolls can be very useful sometimes; trolling is not all about spreading lies, it can also be about exploiting weaknesses, of which is invaluable motivation to improve and patch up the cracks in our system. I'm pretty sure it was him who trolled repeatedly on my blog the other day, using various super-creative usernames and emails. It's kinda funny, I've managed to track his exact name and address from his ISP (with a bit of help).

Might be a bit before the link is made between TO and Ottawa, but I am excited too!! If you can't wait, I suggest you go month-to-month on another carrier, or sign a new contract but sell it when you switch to WIND.

I agree with msc2020 other than about RIM's build quality. The Bold 9700 SUCKS in terms of initial quality! Just about all Bold 9700s have some sort of defective quality: -Sticky/broken keys -Paint chipping (same with keyboard) -Convenience buttons and top buttons (lock and mute) don't click properly -Trackball isn't positioned properly and/or is too wobbly -Silver trim in keyboard snaps into pieces (yup you read that right) -Light bleed from screen sides and bezels -Defective battery -Defective radio (can't get proper signal) Plus, there are a lot of glitches associated with the OS, which itself is cr*p (especially the ...

And Rogers is offering a $99 Unlimited plan through retentions right now; it's still $20 more per month than WIND, but if you LOVE your iPhone...otherwise, get your N1 and switch to WIND. droidhacker definitely knows what he's talking about, listen to him.

Per-second billing doesn't give anyone more minutes...it gives them more calls. How often are your calls exactly :59? Per-minute is a tactic that reeks of Rogers/Bell/Telus.

If you take a look at the Bold specs... http://www.gsmarena.com/blackberry_bold_9700-2963.php Basically, whatever phone you're thinking of, MAKE SURE it has the 1700mHz frequency explicitly listed. None of the other frequencies matter, just the 1700mHz. It's the simplest way to determine compatibility.

If you're on campus, you'll get UTor wifi. Toronto doesn't really have free wifi spots except at Starbucks and whatnot. BTW, I agree with per-second Home, and per-minute Away (since that's what Rogers charges).

I think if WIND-to-WIND is instant, then it's an issue with the other carrier. Normally when I get text delays, I always do a W2W test which shows no delay.

It's lost in the forums somewhere by now, but Graham did make a comment saying they were "working on fixing it". I don't see how it takes weeks to make a simple switch. Can you imagine the headaches company employees have when their clients fail to call them back because they keep hanging up? This is going to be a thorn in WIND's side for years to come.

Get a new one! RIM's had a lot of quality problems with the 9700, including sticky/broken keys, lose or broken bezels and trim, buttons not clicking properly, light bleed, and most of all, wobbly/sunken trackpad, etc.

@johan, I'm sure everyone can differentiate well enough between a busy/fax/(normal) dial tone. But WIND's tone is something unique, yet somewhat close to a busy in that it's a beep and not a ring. It's not a matter of being smart, it's a matter of ending an "unknown" situation by improperly hanging up.

It's a beeeeep beeeeeep like if you're on hold or something...I've heard the sound before but I can't put my finger on it yet. It's not like a sharp busy tone, yet it's no ring like a dial ring. It's just a smooth, mellow beep.

kris416, try having someone powerful who never personally calls "peons" like you and me finally do it and have to hang out twice because of a "busy tone". You think they'd be pleased when you call back? There are many ways WIND can -- and has -- differentiated themselves from the rest. But changing something inane such as a dial ring is akin to changing the number of digits in a phone number -- it's unnecessary, impractical, and causes more problems than benefits. Coverage issues I can deal with because I trust that WIND is working hard. But "deal[ing] with" ...

Actually TSP, you're an eye-dee-ten-tee. ;) z24george, you're quite misleading with your "caps" accusations -- WIND doesn't charge any overage, and their "fair use limits" are so ridiculously high that they're near impossible to reach unless you deliberate make it a goal to hit them. As for data, yes the throttling limit is a bit low at 5GB, but they ONLY do it if you're sharing a tower with a lot of other people.

Looks pretty normal, and I'm Pay After. I just wish the usage detail pages were actually updated on a hourly basis...but that's something to mull over way down the line after they fix tethering and streaming for BB!!

Doubt it. WIND's goal is to push you to the $45 plan (I'm surprised you stayed at $35...no txt/vm?) instead of competing for the $20something in a way over-saturated market of 7+ carriers. Data, they said they'll offer a cheaper plan.

WIND's been great for me. Great coverage, great response time, and great customer service. It's a shame to see you go, OP, but do keep in mind that a brand-new company on a brand-new network isn't going to run as smoothly as your Lexus.

Have you called WIND? And I doubt it, but the stick could be a lemon, too. Try all your avenues first -- calling WIND and getting an ETA on resolution time (that's important, don't let them merely say "we'll take a look at it"), get a replacement stick, and test in different areas.

TBR, it's nearly impossible to offer truly UNLIMITED usage, even for something minute like SMS. I highly doubt you'd be able to hit their "limit" (which does NOT mean you get charged for anything, by the way) of three hours of voice daily, 150 SMS daily, and 5GB/month. Okay, maybe 5GB/month, but they ONLY throttle you if you're sharing a tower with plenty of other people.

Like it or not, the general market LOVES the iPhone -- it's possibly the only smartphone that doesn't have a steep (or supposedly steep) learning curve because even someone with 0 IQ could use it. Talking to my iPhone friends, they have no idea what data is for, they just know they can play games, go on FB, and surf on Safari.

Call WIND to double check when your free month is, because I've been told that their billing system of the 15th of every month causes discrepancies, and it happened to me. In the end, whether it's over 30 days or more, you'll get a credit to the equivalent of the first month free.

JAWG, wow you really jumped ship fast, going from calling some of us "traitors" to being one yourself, so to speak. Anyway, regardless of whether some of you wish to pursue the argument that WIND has limits when they've clearly said multiple times that they don't (other than throttling at 5GB), the important thing is that they don't charge OVERAGE. So sure, try to test them and see what happens...I can guarantee you that nothing will happen to your bill.

shapon, don't listen to these jokers (especially TBR who seems to make a living out of badmouthing WIND...while he probably doesn't even have a line himself). Network and reception are perfectly fine and no worse than what you'd get from Rogers, Bell, or Telus - all carriers experience dropped calls, slow data, etc. once in a while. And sure, I hope WIND offers long distance calling to different countries soon.

Poor signal in: -Central Square hall to VH, and CS Tim Horton's -ACW hall to CFT -Some CLH rooms -TEL -Steadman's a bit weak From my experience, where you can get Rogers coverage, you get WIND; where you can get WIND, you may not get Rogers. It doesn't really make sense because theoretically, Rogers' frequencies should be more penetrable than WIND's. But overall, the signal's great and there's rarely a dropped call or anything (I live on campus).

Actually, Bell/Telus' old CDMA networks are the most established on campus from doing multiple comparos with friends. But WIND's weakness in some of the anti-protesting buildings (read: everything north of the bus loop) is due to the physical limitation of the 1700mHz frequency.

And never did I say "the [WIND] service sucked"...I know you know this for fact, I clearly stated that the port blocking campaign was a protest to demand BETTER service from WIND than an already exceptional experience. I finally found your plan: http://www.telusmobility.com/en/ON/prepaid/unlimitedaddons.shtml It's an add-on to your regular top up of minimum $10/month, so your plan has to be at least $55, no? And you barely get any daytime minutes, which are charged at $0.25/minute. But I'm not knocking, whatever floats your boat.

@JAWG,I try to tell it like it is without being insensitive. If someone lost their number in a port and is still waiting 27 days, they should have dumped WIND 20 days earlier! It's unacceptable for anyone to accept getting dropped onto the backburner while paying for service. We must always be critical of everything; not to be annoyingly nitpicky, greedy, or distrustful, but to ensure that respect is always a two-way steet, especially between the supplier and the consumer.

PS I would be sorely disappointed with WIND if they are truly censoring, especially if they delete my post which wasn't even shameless promotion of Mobilicity (I'm still a WIND fan, for the record). If anything, WIND should work twice as hard to rip them apart even before they launch.

@gmash, I try to be reasonable: I don't put up with cr@p if I feel it's unnecessary. Dropped calls once in a while? Fine. Paying $35 for "unlimited" data when I'm essentially using RIM's BIS servers? I don't think so. I think the only difference between you and me is the amount of patience; you think they've already failed after, what, six weeks, while I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, or at least until Mobilicity launches. Which by then WIND should be able to offer highly competitive features to prevent Mobilicity from sucking up all their current/future subscribers. ...

First of all, WIND didn't rip you off, I guess you weren't too educated about their coverage area nor about their 30-30 policy. Not sure whose fault this is. Secondly, good for you with the plan, let's hope Rogers offers the same great deal to everyone -- existing AND new customers. One question -- do you also get other IM apps such as FB, MySpace, GTalk, and Y!M? PS. Unfortunately/frustratingly, WIND hasn't announced any international roaming agreements, but using any data out of Canada with your Rogers phone results in hefty charges. Not such a great advantage unless BBM is ...

Try doing a phone reset: A) Pull the battery out, wait ten seconds before turning on the phone again. OR B) Hold (all together) Alt-Right Shift-Delete to do a soft reset (essentially a battery pull...the phone will freeze for a moment). Unfortunately, even a flagship BlackBerry needs to be reset constantly...it's pretty disappointing.

"Garbage coverage" in Home Zone is unacceptable, and I hope you called WIND to let them know so that everyone in that area can also benefit. Stepping out of Home Zone, what did you expect? Even if WIND said that voice and data would continue to work fine while roaming, being a former Rogers subscriber I have zero faith that Rogers wouldn't try to pull a quick one on WIND. Basically, you should have known the coverage areas you frequent before signing up. However, WIND employees generally make that clear, so it's unfortunate that your rep may not have done ...

gmash, do you get unlimited data or unlimited browsing? There's a difference...one allows for tethering and the other doesn't. As it stands at this point in time, no carrier offers tethering. :( But WIND will soon!

Home Zone = where WIND has 3G service up and running. Anywhere else = roaming on WIND Away. So Cgy and TO are Home Zones, all local. Edmonton and Ottawa will be soon, and Vancouver...then eventually the entire country except central Quebec.

PS. For the proposed unlimited browsing plan, a soft cap of anywhere from 1-5GB is completely acceptable. Anyone who surpasses this soft cap can be encouraged by WIND to upgrade the data plan, no-contract of course!

I agree. Honesty, accountability, and transparency are the pillars to building strong customer loyalty -- especially in a world of no contracts! I would be much happier knowing whether something is black or white than being teased that it's one while lacking proof that it's the other.

mccans, that is essentially what's happening -- we're getting monthly credits. Now, WIND might read these comments and think, "Oh! Well easy solution...stop giving out credits and we can save money." ...which is logical, but it wouldn't resolve the core issue. IMO, the more people who ask for credits, the more pro-active WIND will be in allowing true unlimited data for BB users (since all you N900 and Nexus One users seem to be fine! >:( ). I realize that WIND has an armful on their plate, but data is a great cash cow and they're currently not milking it ...

Campus is fine for me, and I live here lol. And actually, I noticed today in TEL basement that my reception has significantly improved!! But I got direct confirmation from WIND that the Chimneystack Rd tower is not active, so we're connecting to the Jane St one. I urged them to activate the tower on campus ASAP so York's concrete buildings of death won't kill our signal.

Anon, I was under the exact same impression -- it's nationwide LOCAL! And I have the SmartDial setting on my BB disabled so that it never puts 1 in front of a number, causing the no circuit issue. Well, if they charge me long distance... P.S. Yes, the pre-recorded message before the call tells me to dial one.

I knew I was on Rogers when it was EDGE. Perhaps "edge" could be as well...but what explains "gprs"?? And if I can roam on Rogers 2G, why not AT&T? Though Windy could be right, could be T-Mo 2G. Well, I expect to pay around $50 in roaming usage, I was using my BB like crazy for work.

However, do keep in mind that interpersonal, technical, and social skills remain integral aspects of job hiring, and as it stands your behaviour on WIND does not make prospects too promising. I highly doubt people would get annoyed by an SMS -- if anything, they would get annoyed that there's an outage! I even suggest an SMS advance notice a full day before the outage (in the morning) and one exactly 60 minutes before the outage as a final reminder. Also, have a opt-out option where the subscriber merely texts back "out" (free of charge!) if they wish to no longer receive notification. In the beginning (way back in December), I had sporadic signal issues here and there and calling problems. I called them, and within two weeks everything was adjusted to the point where it was like they put a femtocell in my body. Things progressed smoothly everywhere I went in the GTA (and, like droidhacker, I was "smooth sailing" while others complained of repeated problems) right up until last Saturday during the planned outage. Nowadays, I can't make a call without it dropping, anywhere from 30secs in to 13mins in -- weirdly enough, one of the few calls that didn't drop ...

You said it yourself, money can be made on volume. Canada's population density is so low that it's hard to achieve any conceivable volume targets. It doesn't mean that we aren't getting ripped off by the incumbents (of course we are!), but we will never be as competitive as India's rates.

To expand on what fogjuice says, I'm starting to take WIND's word with a fistful of salt. The info I give is accurate (I think it's somewhere on this website, can't remember anymore, maybe on HoFo) -- at the time I bring it up, anyway. Apologies, but not my fault if WIND keeps delaying and delaying their schedules. Maybe I should say not to expect opened ports for the BB until next decade, so I won't ever need to make a fool of myself.

I totally agree, I brought it up with WIND reps and all they said was, "You have unlimited, why do you care?" Not that I'd switch, but it's not exactly giving users real choices (e.g. if they want to judge on the value of WIND).

Oh I forgot to also mention that various WIND employees had given me dates of 22/23 and 26 of February for Ottawa and Edmonton (or vice versa), and this was a couple weeks ago. Today, I got an email saying they "won't be launching for at least another month." $50 roaming charges, here I come.

I agree. Obviously, schedules change and whatnot, but quietly admitting it won't do anything to appease anxious subscribers (and future subscribers). Ironically, WIND sometimes lacks proper communication where it counts the most!

LOL is that for real?! I can't believe Valve has a wiki for this. I certainly wish HL3 would come out, um, shortly. So, fogjuice, I guess my reputation remains intact given that I've been speaking in Valve Time all along. ;)

Uhh what the? Anyway, if you text 32665 for example (I know I know, FB isn't enabled yet, but that's not the point), it doesn't work. Remember when you could text to donate to Haiti? Doesn't work. NO "short message transfers" work with WIND, and though it's not a big deal I don't see why they can't have it enabled.

I have connection most of the time and it's fairly stable, but I did get repeated outages and even got stuck in SOS for the first time ever (on 3G only, not WIND Away since that's now disabled). I'm at York U, btw. I just wish they'd follow through with the idea of texting users about "planned" outages.

If possible, could you ask the WIND guys if the west part of Ottawa is active (even just at times)? I'll be in Ottawa West/Nepean soon, don't want to pay roaming.

For a $15 browsing plan, you wouldn't need to tether or use the data to the fullest extent, so I would be okay with ports being blocked for that plan only. But at least allowing streaming with the browsing would be fair.

Public Mobile is not running AWS..it's running CDMA. Videotron and Shaw are the other upcoming contenders, but they won't have much (if any) impact on the GTA/Southwestern Ontario market.

Thanks so much, WIND!! Only one thing (which I'm in the process of emailing about): prelim testing shows that there is still no direct TCP/IP connection, which may cause problems for expert users. However, it should be a suitable solution for the majority of BB users, so kudos! :)

After all my complaining, I actually HAVE noticed some improvement in York University!! Thank you for specifically mentioning it. ;) It still ain't as perfect as Ottawa yet, but definitely improvement and I appreciate the work WIND is putting into improving and expanding their service.

Jamie, MMS is covered under a plan?? I thought it was $0.20 per message to anyone, WIND customer or not. Please clarify this as I've been getting charged for every MMS that I send, thanks.

It's good that you enjoy your plan, but you should still push Fido to do better. 1) Only province-wide and not nationwide unlimited 2) Capped data (which, to be fair, might still be more than enough) 3) Three-year contract You're still within the limit to cancel the Fido plan -- I suggest telling them that you've reconsidered and might switch to WIND anyway and see what better deal they can give you!

.586 was made official shortly after, but it's the exact same copy. I'd say it's worth it! I heard bad things about the releases in between but almost unanimous praise for .586.

In my opinion, to keep with the WIND mantra, data plans must be unlimited: Unlimited data incl BIS, ports unblocked = $35 Unlimited browsing w/ email = $15 Unlimited browsing (mostly for dumbphones) = $10 Unlimited browsing has a soft cap of 1-3GBs. Unlimited for all!

Hi Anisa, I just called WIND and they have no knowledge of this special plan for early adopters. As the second customer ever, I will definitely "boost my customer status" if it means I can get the $15/mo Always Shout!! :D

I am happy that WIND has introduced a new plan and have updated current ones. However, I strongly encourage WIND to implement a simple reminder system to anyone exceeding their maximum data allotment by $5 (which is 125MB) to ugrade data plans. It'd go a long way to show that WIND isn't ruthless enough to take advantage of users who mistakenly go over. And I agree with suggestions to allow for at least one BIS email account on the Social.

I think the overage cap is definitely a great idea that can be implemented much faster than a notification system -- which also needs to be implemented fast (I, like mccans, don't understand how this major oversight came to be, unless for purely economic reasons).

Callback was pretty fast for me. WIND's still got great customer service, but only if you get through to them. They need to ramp up hiring staff, and fix billing so that it's not ALL charged at the beginning of each month.

In the heart of Toronto, there are still inexplicable network issues that NO other carrier experiences. But when I was in Ottawa prior to the official launch, network quality there was absolutely flawless. Thus, it's apparent that the network issues have nothing to do with being a new carrier -- it's entirely about poor network management in Toronto. The tech staff need to be retrained or replaced. Not to be Toronto-centric, but screwing up in Canada's biggest and most competitive market and ignoring the problems is going to be the death of WIND. All that said, even though I've given ...

I wouldn't say WIND reps are lying, but rather that someone at WIND has seriously failed to take action to fix the network. There are other areas that I've reported since launch that have not been touched, even after getting callbacks asking if I've noticed improvement (which there isn't).

Wait, if it's on your bill then it's different; their billing system is setup for some inane reason to cap the minutes at 30, and start a new line after. So two hours of continuous talk time = four lines of 30 mins. It doesn't mean that your line was cut after talking for 30 mins.

What's with the mega hate?? A tab is not going to increase the cost of the phone -- rather than paying $450 up front, you can pay $45/month for ten months. There is NO contract obligation; if, following the model above, you decide to leave wind after two months, then you simply need to cough up the remaining $360. You would sign an agreement stating that you'll pay, of course...and it would be no different than a phone bill. There is no choice for the subscriber to determine whether they want to continue paying the tab or not if something happens.

When I signed up with WIND, the rep searched through every single number that I requested and only denied me because they were premium numbers or something ($$$!). But what I eventually picked, she just typed it in and voila.

FB text is no extra charge ON TOP of your existing messaging plan. So you still need unlimited texts from WIND for $5.

While I agree with droidhacker, I think it's the warranty issue that keeps people away from non-carrier purchases. I've swapped my Berry a few times with no hassle at the first sign of trouble, but I wouldn't be able to do that if I bought it over a third-party supplier.

I think Apple will release an AWS iPhone. CDMA is just a small fraction of the global market, and even Verizon and Sprint are moving on to LTE. Or, Apple will just skip steps and release an iPhone 4G.

Unfortunately, WIND is always horrendously slow to adopt popular suggestions. (E.G. short code SMS...in nearly the time it takes for a baby to be born, they've only managed to add Facebook.)
