I'll second your cheaper plans AND unlimited text messaging (both recieving/sending). However, unlimited data plan - are you for serious? Get a smart phone with Wi-Fi enabled and use the hotspots. Why pay for data plans when the service is available freely in most cities.

I never understood this phenomenon of subsidizing the phone! Do many people subsidize their other electronic purchases like TV, PC or Surround systems? If not, then why subsidize cell phones - which is quite affordable to begin with considering the other items I listed. Just have it open, buy your own phone of any kind and get a SIM card from telco - off you go.

First of all BB 9700 is NOT ridiculously priced. It is meant for business folks - you know the ones who can actually afford it or have it paid or subsidized through their work. There are lots of phones with lots of features to suit your individual NEEDS and not WANTS. Everyone wants everything and it's not necessarily a wrong thing. However, you also have to watch your budget and stop living on credit. I can see you still have to learn lessons from this latest recession that we're all still trying to get out of unscathed.

What the heck is with Americans and Canadians wanting the cell phone company to subsidize their phone for them? Quit living pay cheque to pay cheque and buy it out right when you need it. It is not that big an investment for crying out loud.

Straight from the horse's mouth: "Lacavera said the pricing is "not revolutionary" compared to what Bell, Rogers and Telus are currently charging..." I thought all they hype was to shake things up and bring revolution to Canadian wireless scene? I still can't figure out from your site if we can just purchase a SIM card for AWS open phones. ryusoma, please educate yourself about phone frequencies. Advanced Wireless Systems (AWS) that Wind operates on has only specific frequencies - 1700/2100 GHz. Most of the unlocked phones that many people have with Rogers, Fido etc are not capable of operating on those frequencies and hence cannot be used on Wind network. A SIM is SIM is a SIM - there's no difference between SIMs from say Rogers or Wind. The difference is in the little transmitter that's built in the phone by the phone manufacturer. Wind CANNOT do anything in this regard.

Does your phone work on AWS frequencies - 1700/2100 GHz? If so, you can probably get on Wind network down the road if/when they start selling SIMs only.

doublell, that is why you should always go for the international phones. Yes, there are phones out there that can operate in multiple frequencies and it's all built right into the phones. For example, BlackBerry Bold is one such phone capable of operating on just about any frequency. You can use it with Telus/Bell/Rogers/Wind or any other phone company in the US or internationally.

Aileen, thanks for answering some of the community questions here. However, I must say I will not hop on the band wagon until the following 2 offerings occur: 1. Unlocked phones and ability to swap SIMs and here's why: When I do travel internationally, I don't want to pay for roaming charges however great they maybe. Case in point, I can go to India or China and get a temporary SIM from there and you cannot ever even hope to match their prices. Even for long distance calls back to Canada will be much cheaper than your roaming charges alone. ...

Try buying BB from Telus, scary prices http://www.telusmobility.com/en/AB/blackberry_bold_9700/index.shtml BTW, they have limited phones because AWS frequency is kind of new. Not every phone manufacturer is well.. manufacturing phones capable of this frequency. Not really Wind's fault. Wait a few months and there shall be more choice.

All the smart phones should be retail. However, they should provide basic phones with ability to SMS free with just 12 months contract. That would go over nicely with people on limited budget like Katgrrl. Seriously, you should check out the prices of basic cell phones in countries like India/China - they are dirt cheap to buy without even contracts. Heck, even US companies giving away free basic capability phones with 2 year contracts.

I don't think Wind is to blame for these prices. They have roaming agreements with Rogers/Bell/Telus and they set the charges which would of course be passed on to customers. I mean why would Wind pay for it from their own pockets - they are in the business to make money.

Yes, your ipaq (or any other AWS phone) will work with WIND SIM. It's already been tested and wind customers. Look into one of the N900 threads. The guy managed to get it working with WIND SIM today.

It is quite possible to take years for national network. However, if Wind has any common sense to turn profit sometime in the next year or so then they will have to build it. Or else customers will stay away - they know that.

To answer your question - yes, you'll have to get at least the cheapest plan $15 plus the add on $5. So for $20 a month you can text all you want. Of course if you were thinking of just paying $5 for texting only - you're dreaming. What you don't realize is that wireless companies operate expensive infrastructure to hold your text messages (max 72 hrs) when your phone is turned off and deliver them when it's turned on. These infrastructures cost the company money and they have to recoup it somehow.

They probably had a detailed implementation plan until CRTC goofs forced WIND to shelve it. Then all of a sudden Industry Canada gave them green light and now they have to dust off the plan and start implementing it in short period. You think that is easy - you're friggin' dreaming. Get off your high horse and give them a chance to build it. In the mean time if you want to blow off some steam - direct it towards CRTC and Telus/Rogers for throwing in the wrench.

Ugh.. some people have such narrow tunnel vision. Let me try to broaden it for you: 1-2 years down the road when Wind does have towers all over the country, per second/minute billing won't really matter. Because you can get unlimited US/Canada calling and recieving. Almost all of Canada will be so called home zone because all calls will be going through their own towers and not bouncing off of greedy Rogers/Bell/Telus towers. You won't have to outrageous roaming charges ever between the 2 countries. WTF are you going to do with per second billing?

Keyser, those nationwide calling plans are from the same company network to same company network. i.e. T-mobile cell phone user calling another t-mobile cell phone user nation wide is free. The same is true with WIND. Free nation wide calling. The only thing is, WIND has just started to build their network. Once their national network is up and running you won't be roaming as much as you might right now.

Yes, actually it does work. Only catch is - if you want it to work right now.. you'll have to buy one of WIND's cheap phone. Remove SIM from it and insert it into your N9000. Of course, you can also wait until they start offering SIMs - then you wouldn't have to buy WIND phone only to throw it away.

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your HTC is useless. You better return it and get N900 if you can. HTC will not work on AWS spectrum. However, N900 is known to work with Wind SIM.

Jonavin, that's not true about BB9700. It IS the same phone for all carriers. See RIM saw it fit to create a QUAD band phone - able to run anywhere in the world on pretty much any band.

All cell phones operate on 2 frequency bands. In Wind system, 2100 is used by tower to connect to your phone and 1700 is used by your phone to talk back to tower.

They do have FAQ but it is hidden under the "Support" section. Wind needs to make it prominent with a direct link to FAQ on the home page. That should reduce the number of users repeating the same questions like can I bring my iPhone over?

And who scrolls down to bottom these days... oh yeah, no one. Hence, the number of repeated questions. Your conversation link is so prominent on home page, everyone jumps to it and starts blasting away with their hundreds of useless questions that have been answered hundreds of times. You need to make FAQ prominent on home page and move the link from all other pages to somewhere at the top. Better yet, just create a FAQ link in between "Support" & "Community" links in the top banner.

I'm really sick and tired of hearing this. Why the HECK would WIND pay for you to cancel your contract with another cell phone company? Globalive is not the Canadian Mint and cannot print money on will however much they might wish to. It's your obligation to a crappy cell phone company. You made the mistake of signing 3 year contract instead of buying the phone to begin with and using month to month or pay as you go schemes. Now YOU pay for it. I know.. tough luck but such is life. If THAT is not enough for some people and want WIND to bend over backwards for you just because you had been doing it for so long at the whims of Big 3... then I don't know what will create good will. I myself am waiting for Xperia X10 to finally get my first ever cell phone. If motorola milestone is released in AWS version then I'll definitely consider that too. Milestone would actually be my first pick but X10 will be out in 2010 Q1. Haven't even heard any rumours about AWS milestone. Though there might be some new entrants in 2010 January in CES.

Always talk has unlimited province wide calling to any number (WIND or NON-WIND). If you also want unlimited Canada wide calling to any number - that's what the add on is for. However, then you're better off on "Always Shout" plan.

It's not just a matter of one band or the other. All cell phones make use of 2 bands regardless of the technology. That IS how you can talk and listen at the same time. Your phone is using 2100 Mhz to listen from tower. While 1700 Mhz is being used by your phone to send whatever you speak to tower. Yup, it's an oversight on WIND's part. Because by having that add-on, you end up paying the same amount as Always Shout however, you don't get the same features as Always Shout. i.e. no unlimited outgoing SMS (text).

And why not? The company will be charging the same amount as shout plan but not providing the same features. In my book that's a rip off. If someone does end up in this situation, WIND should automatically bump them up to Shout plan.

If your phone allows tethering then you can cancel your Internet subscription too with Shaw/Rogers or whatever other greedy ISP you have.

Another good practice is to create a brand new Google account, if and when it's released to Canada. Then use this new account to order it. If you use your existing account then Google will essentially be able to tie your search/web history that they have accumulated over the years to your real ID as a person.

I'd assume WIND is deliberately blocking it for now until most of the other issues are sorted out and then open up things as they stabilize. This is the proper way to implement things - you know trial and error. It's not like they have been doing this forever - it's only been 1 month.

One person eh - that's just a wild assumption on your part. I don't see any problems either with users posting their opinion. However, it does get tiring when the same person posts multiple times for the same reason in one single day. No, the speed is supposed to be same be same for all plans - even social BB. And I think it's probably 7.2Mbps - not sure.

They would be better off offering a single infinite data plan for say $50. As long as it can be used on either a USB stick or phone (tethering). Not many people will see the benefit of tethering (and getting a phone inifite add on) if they can't do all the things that a real internet connection allows. Might as well just get a shout plan and instead of data add-on, just order a USB stick. At least this way, you can use both at the same time.

I can understand the reason for differentiation between Social BB plan and other infinite plan and USB Internet stick. But there shouldn't be any differentiation of service between Infinite and USB Internet stick plans.

$55 is still too much - even for usb stick. Here's what I propose: $10 social blackberry (as is) $20 unlimited mobile plan (tailored to mobile phones with restrictions and access to whitelisted apps only) $30 unlimited mobile plan (with P2P & large file download restriction) $40-$45 unlimited plan with no restrictions (phone OR usb stick)

Chris, I don't know why you need to optimize for phone vs laptop (usb stick access). As far as tethering goes, we should be able to have same access as usb stick internet. Can you get your techies to explain why the differentiation between 2 services that ideally should be identical?

I'd say come up with a single price for infinite data plan whether using USB stick or phone (tethering) and identical data services on both. The way it is priced and differentiated right now would mean no sensible person would order a phone infinite add-on. Since you can just order a stick, pay $20 bucks more for unfettered access and the ability to use your phone and internet at the same time.

BTW, SSH stands for S(ecure) Sh(ell). Mainly used for secure dump terminal connection to servers running SSH server.

Aha... the line breaks are recorded properly if you look into source code of the page. However, their content style sheet (CSS) is screwing it up and removing those new line characters. The more likely cause is port blocking, especially if it works through Wi-Fi with no problems. Log a complaint.

Agree with you there about techies or wind personnel not actively answering/commenting on questions/ideas. So far we've been talking to a virtual wall. Wind doesn't seem to get it - a conversation is a two way street AND blocking ports does not equate to WHOLE INTERNET as they seem to claim. They better get their act together or I'll be reluctantly forced to wait for a few more years to get a cell phone. It is a nice to have but not a necessity for me and I imagine there are lot more people out there like me.

I hate nothing more than these useless feel good responses from WIND when they can be actively answering other important technical/plan/phone/coverage questions here in the community. Useless as usual... change your WIND Cares name to WIND Marketing - that'd be more accurate.

Oh forgot to add, I also received 5 years in home service plan from Sony itself without the exuberant charges that Best Buy charges for extended/in home service plans. Mind you I have never used it but that speaks volumes for the Sony products itself.

007, I actually saved over $1500 when I bought my Sony LCD 42" from Sony store 4 years ago. It was their flag ship TV at that time. I promptly returned the over priced and exactly same model I had bought the week before from Best Buy.

I feel sorry and grateful at the same time. I feel sorry that WIND has started off on the wrong foot and continue to scr*w things up instead of stabilizing the service and then expanding. I feel grateful for you brave souls who volunteered to be beta testers of this new service for me and future WIND customers ;-) ...that is if WIND gets its act together.

@Medeiros there's no reason why they can't communicate and fix at the same time. They DO have a dedicated marketing/communication department and not to mention dedicated person(s) viewing these posts. These people are obviously not the ones doing the FIXING. In short, yeah we expect more since the first month of free service will be running out soon and no one wants to pay for sub standard service starting next month.

@WiseGuy almost all early adopters of technology KNOW they will have to put up with bugs etc until said technology is stabilized. And almost every company starts selling technology before it's even remotely considered to be perfected. Look at iPhone and iPods as an example. If you're an early adopter then you should also have the patience to go with it. Don't expect perfect technology from the get go - you'll be disappointed every single time.

Doh! Oh you're so sneaky lol. Good suggestion, I'd add a list of on-going problems, their priorities and estimated time frame on when they might be fixed. Remember, honesty and open communications is what WIND has been preaching... time to practice what you preach. No one with a even a bit of common sense will think any less of Globalive. You might also convince the fencers to convert too if you're open about it.

Did you forget to read that Bravo is rumored only at this stage and Motoroi is "For South Korean market"? You want WIND to abandon the N1 for a phone that doesn't exist yet and the other that's only for South Korea. Are you nuts?

To add to Victor's explanation... it's the same reason why Apple won't release their iPhone/iPod numbers and why Google won't release Nexus One numbers. Hint: Hype/rumour/assumptions do have untold business values.
