While price is important, I agree that other factors will greatly influence my future mobile phone decision; price alone, would not be enough. It would not matter what priced plans or phones Bell offered, I will not go back to them. The customer "service", and I intentionally put that in quotations, was absolutely atrocious. Gil, it's definitely not a time to lock into a contract. Chances are, you can simply go month-to-month with your current provider and nothing will change. Once you are month-to-month, this makes you even more a target for special offers and incentives as they know you can pack up and leave at any time. Definitely take your time, and don't jump too soon. I believe there's still plenty of life left in Wind yet; especially with Tony Clement saying the government is going to review the CRTC decision and they still believe more competition is needed. Rogers response is just distraction. While true, Bell is guilty as well, Rogers didn't respond to the point made by Branson. They didn't defend the fee, just gave a schoolyard, "oh yeah, well so are you!". Rogers fee is even more insidious than Bell's. While some are still confused that a SAF is somehow a government "tax" of some kind, many people now realize it's just a bogus fee of 100% free revenue to the carrier. Um, you do realize, Rogers has already lodged protests over DAVE and Public mobiles ownership structure as well, right? Hi Tammy, yes, I posted it earlier, as well, I've posted it elsewhere. I just think people need to realize, this isn't so much about Wind's actual corporate structure as it is about the incumbents taking care of competition by any means they can. I find it hugely ironic that in interview after interview, Rogers' officials claim that even with Wind not launching there will still be plenty of competition in Canada and name DAVE and Public mobile by name as evidence of the fact. Sorry, forgot to add... dbennett9, you are absolutely right! Most providers in the UK, you can get a smartphone on a 1 or 2 year contract for £0. The reason? Most of the carriers in the UK are foreign owned, large corporations who can use their international size to give UK consumers a real deal and choice. Stark contrast to us here in Canada.

I think it's time to make this decision, and the dire ramifications it has for Canadians, more public. There are many people (like us) who have been following this closely, there are many others who are aware, but I think there are millions of Canadians who simply don't follow these types of things but who would likely be outraged at the CRTC's decision and this entire process. That's great Tammy!! The bad news of course, is that Parliament Hill will be shutting down soon for 2 months for their "Christmas" break. I'm not sure what, if anything, is going to happen for a while. Let's hope they realize there's some urgency to this!

@ihaterogers Wait a week or so from the time you wrote. That should be sufficient time to, at the very least, get an acknowledgement of receipt of your correspondence. If you've received nothing in that timeframe, write a polite follow-up referencing your previous correspondence and let them know you are following up because this issue is important to you and you would appreciate a response.

I buy a prepaid Virgin mobile USA phone when I travel in the states. It's amazing that it's cheaper for me to buy actual hardware along with the minutes, than to use my Blackberry while travelling south of the border.

Is this with regard to the Wind/Globalive CRTC decision? It sounds more like the throttling decision where the CRTC allowed Bell/Rogers etc to throttle traffic, even that of the wholsalers to whom they sold bandwidth. I don't believe he's talking about the same thing we are here.

Well, perhaps if you'd like to go to the Bell, TELUS or Rogers sites and comment on their forum... oh wait, that's right, they don't have one. So I guess Wind actually deserves kudos for at least giving people the opportunity to get things off their chest... even NIMBY's.

Totally agree that the System Access Fee (SAF) is a completely bogus fee. i believe Wind has already confirmed there will be no SAF on their system. === Having said that, I think it's untrue to say "most carriers" are getting rid of it. Only the bargain brands (which aren't separate carriers, just part of the big 3's empire) don't have it, but your choices on those brands are severely limited. === Of the 3 main carriers, only TELUS has truly gotten rid of the SAF. Rogers "got rid of the SAF" but then raised plan fees by $5 and ...

...because some people don't read the fine print and will just accept it as another "tax" they have to pay, not realizing it's Rogers trying to hoodwink them by saying they got rid of the SAF, but in the end, subscribers actually pay more. It's one of the more underhanded tactics I've seen from the big 3, and that's saying a mouthful! I truly believe Consumer Affairs has to look into this latest move by Rogers as a potential case of deceptive trade practices or whatever the appropriate term for what they've done should be called (aside from scamming consumers).

Caller ID costs carriers virtually nothing. The phone # information is transmitted with every call anyway, all the carrier has to do is "turn it on" and for that "privilege" the big 3 charge you $84/year; essentially almost 100% profit for them.

Apparently, Industry Canada, a Ministry of the Federal Government of Canada, considered Globalive a Canadian company, and as such allowed them to bid on and acquire wireless spectrum. The fact that an unelected board of former Big 3 execs found otherwise to the benefit of the Big 3, doesn't make Globalive un-Canadian.

Wonderful post Chris! Rogers coverage east of Montréal is pathetic at best. They have virtually no coverage in Newfoundland but a tiny sliver in St. John's, and that's spotty at best. This after they've been a "national carrier" for many years. They truly need to get their own house in order before they start musing about buying others.

I think it is a VERY bad move to sign a new 3 year deal with anyone right now. There is so much change on Canada's wireless horizon from Wind and possibly regulatory change that will bring other new investment in the sector. To be locked in until almost the end of 2012 is not a smart move at the moment, no matter how tempting a discount may seem.

Agreed Mccans, there have been an awful lot of "first and only" posters on here lately trying to tear down Wind. Likely people who foolishly just locked in with T/B/R for 3 years for a $200 discount on a handset, and now don't want to see they made a huge mistake. :)

The crisis hit Canada far more than Europe? I don't think so. How many Canadian banks failed? How many European banks failed? There's your answer. That's certainly not to say Canada was unaffected, as we all know. Despite this, look at R/B/T profits during all this. That speaks volumes.

I agree with np, this doesn't address the Globalive situation at all, it doesn't even mention it. It is talking about how Bell etc were allowed to throttle speeds of clients who weren't even clients of Bell, but of companies like Techsavvy who bought bandwidth from Bell. The CRTC allowed them (and others) to slow down the speeds of clients of companies to whom Bell is merely a wholesaler. While I think it's nice of you Tammy, to give her benefit of the doubt, I don't think the message you're trying to send with regard to Globalive is getting through ...

I just reread the MP's reply, and it is without a doubt Ms. Ambrose is not addressing the issue you wrote to her about at all! As np originally said, they see "CRTC" and "Decision" in a constituent email and send out a stock response based on what they think the letter is about, not necessarily what it is actually concerning. The CRTC isn't doing anything tomorrow, the Government is reviewing the CRTC's decision and tomorrow is just a deadline for submissions, there likely won't be an announcement that soon, but stranger things have happened. As for your original posting --- Well, you can't have it both ways. If you don't want them to launch simply because you say Globalive has "shady" business practices, then what you're saying is Globalive is calling the shots. @John, the source is Mr. Mohamed from Rogers, musing aloud recently that if they could, they'd like to buy a portion of Globalive's spectrum. (not to actually use of course, just to sit on to keep it away from potential competitors) Globalive is NOT "evaluating" anything. I could go on TV and say I'd like to buy the CN Tower, it doesn't mean they'd be "evaluating" my offer. This is how rumours get started.

Riley's sources are almost always EXTREMELY reliable. If he's confident enough to post this, there is definitely something to it. As he always says, nothing is ever guaranteed, but I think this is a very encouraging sign, and there must be more at play than most of us are aware of. Riley called TELUS getting the iPhone this fall way back in spring/early summer. Most people scoffed because at that time, TELUS wasn't even supposed to launch their new network until sometime in 2010. With all due respect, if you don't want to get a data plan with an iPhone, you're much better off just getting an iPod touch. It can do almost everything the iPhone can and is $500 cheaper! A little less convenient to carry 2 devices, your phone and iPod, but a small price to pay to save that kind of money. Sell your iPhone, get an iPod touch and use the leftover to buy a decent non-data phone.

It's certainly what we all want to hear, but as Clumpen said, the big 3 are completely predatory. I've read Bell (though their sub-brand Solo) is already trying to counter Public Mobile's offering... but of course, only in cities where Public Mobile is launching. Make no mistake, the big 3 will do (and have already proven this) whatever they can to quash competition. Knowing Wind's full details before they even have the go-ahead to launch would be lethal. Community resources are stretched more than ever now with the current economic climate and reaching out to help people, in small ways and large, is more important now than ever. Not sure if this is anwering your question as I'm not 100% sure what you're asking but... I think, and I certainly stand to be corrected on this, initially, as a Wind customer, you will be roaming while in other parts of the country where Wind has not yet launched. Wind will eventually be a full national network, it'll just take a little time to get up and running on a scale that large.

Angelo, there's a world of difference between the 3 incumbents, with bloated prices and profits, not to mention well over 90% of the market, offering identical plans, fees and services vs brand new upstarts, trying to share technology and infrastructure to help break that oligopoly. Where was the Canadian consumer in anything Krstajic said? What will happen to all of Public mobile's customers once Bell buys them out? Then again, being headed by a former Bell head, worrying about the consumer is the last thing I'd expect anyway.

Well, to be honest, I don't queue up for anything. When Wind does launch, whatever's available at 9:00am is still going to be available at 5:00pm when I leave the office. It's not like there's a limited number of phones they'll give out and then shut down. Though I, and even moreso I suspect Wind, appreciate your enthusiasm. :)

Since Mr. Masse is the Industry critic, and this is posted on the NDP website, it appears this is indeed the official position of the NDP. So much for them standing up for the little guy I guess. As important as it is to let those in power know how Canadians feel on this issue, it is just as important to let those who are arguing AGAINST Canadian Consumers know as well. Mr. Masse & Mr. Layton need to understand their position is contrary to the vast majority of their constituents.

It's no hassle to cancel your phone if the contract has expired. If you Dont want the phone any more just tell them that. If you do, you don't have to do anything. You'll automatically go month to month. You may have created quite a mess for yourself by telling them that you'd died. That'll obviously now be noted on your account and should you ever want any type of service, a flag is going to come up that someone is trying to sign up using a fraudulent name.

Bell has long had the distinction of being the cellar dweller of the big 3 in terms of customer service. Even their new CEO recently committed to fixing errors of the past in the dismal way they treated their customers. Hmmmm, the past as in when Krstajic was head??

I find the timing of this announcement from Rogers, rather... interesting. Not to minimize the impact of anyone losing their job, but the fact that Rogers can remove 900 executive and management people from their structure and still, I'm sure, have plenty remaining to run the company, speaks volumes to the benefits they enjoy as an incumbent player in Canada's non-competitive wireless and cable sector.

The point isn't whether they are going to pass or not, at this point no one knows. Despite R/B/T's assertions, the Globalive decision was far from predicted by most. The fact is, the official NDP Industry critic has erred in a major way on a very serious issue; one for which he is the spokesperson for his entire party. That's an excuse trotted out regularly by the incumbents. The truth is, 3/4 of Canada's population lives within a 100 miles strip of the US border. Sure, they have to do some coverage of less densely populated areas, but they pick and choose what and who they want to cover (ask anyone trying to pick up a Rogers' signal in Newfoundland!). So sorry, that argument doesn't wash. In terms of towers covering land mass, the incumbents with their selective service areas have far less geography to cover than you'd think.

Not really. Mr. Engelhart's assertions have all been quickly and easily discredited. If wanting to stack Canada's wireless environment up against the rest of the world, I think I'll take the findings of an unbiased international research study over the word of a Rogers' executive whose main insterest is in maintaining the status quo. ie, obscene profits for Canadian wireless providers with little to no choice for consumers.

I think this is a very prudent course of action. Canada's wireless statistics are staggering (and not in a good way!). The more people understand their frustrations are shared by many others, the more demand there will be for change.

4G, you make some interesting points. First, the opposition (Liberals at least) actually support overturning the CRTC decision. With the Liberals on-side, the Government would have more than enough support to allow Wind to launch. As to why Industry Canada didn't warn Gloablive? Not only did they not warn them, they APPROVED them and advised they did in fact pass muster as Canadian controlled. That's the major issue for me. How does the government (through Industry Canada) say go ahead and spend ½ BILLION dollars on spectrum and then have an unelected board, heavily influenced by the very firms Wind ...

Here's the thing... do you foresee consumers being WORSE off when Wind launches? Obviously not. So, worst case scenario, we have a 4th national carrier with the same offerings we already have; no harm no foul. But I think that's extremely unlikely. I think all of us who have taken the time to research and find this website, and moreso to post on here, will not simply jump on baord blindly. @Narmak, $10 off a $45 plan is more than a 22% discount. The most Rogers usually gives is 15% for bundles, and that's only if you have wireless, cable, internet AND home phone. How'd you swing that? Is it a retention deal?

While the iPhone is still incredibly popular for the masses, real phone enthusiasts recognize that it's becoming more and more dated technology. I've no doubt Wind will have Android phones; let's just let them get their launch under their belts first, eh?! :) Phones can be added very quickly once the network is up and running and once Wind allows unlocked devices, you'll be able to get phones elsewhere to use on Wind, like T-Mobile in the US.

I am in shock that TELUS would stoop this low as a corporate entity. They must really be worried about Wind. Ask TELUS about their Philippine call centres. I wonder what we could come up with if we trolled every financial relationship Rogers, TELUS and Bell have with various companies world wide.

It really is just like the Queen song. People not only want it all, they want it now. I guess it'd be better to give free unlimited roaming and go under in 6 months than do things slowly and prudently so they will, in time, be a force to be reckoned with against the big 3. No one's forcing anyone to sign with Wind. If the details are so offensive, Rogers, TELUS or Bell are all too happy to take your money and find even more creative ways to screw you than roaming charges.

Guys, Wind has said all along that during their initial launch phase, they would be activating Wind purchased phones only. They have every intention (at least they say they do) to do SIM only activations once everything settles down a bit.

Wind charges $100 less for the BlackBerry 9700 with NO CONTRACT than Telus does requiring a TWO YEAR COMMITMENT. Not sure what more you expect from Wind.

Guys, you're expecting too much too soon. Give Wind a chance! Unlike Rogers/Bell etc. who got their spectrum for free years ago, Wind had to pay almost half a billion dollars just for the airwaves to broadcast cellular service. On top of that, they have to build a whole new network from the ground up. If you're expecting blanket nation wide coverage 24 hours after launch, I think that's a bit unrealistic.

You're almost certainly mistaken. If you can't google something to back it up, it's not real. ...and it's not. I think, as someone else mentioned, you're confusing the threat of a lawsuit by a telecom union (and don't worry about that either, that's not even going to get off the ground).

I think it's amusing that @arctik has berated a couple of people for not checking their facts and looking on the site when they've asked questions, and then asks, SHOUTS actually, about Wind hiding their terms of use when they're actually linked on the bottom of EVERY PAGE of the website.

More phones are coming, just have some patience. Wind is not even a week live yet. As I've stated before, Wind's 9700 is cheaper with NO TERM COMMITMENT than it is on 2 year contract with the big 3. All things come to those who wait, plus they will be selling SIM's only soon, so you can buy a phone elsewhere and activate it with Wind. Just be sure it's compatible.

Yes, some people who have minimal command of the English language, resort to "flagging" posts and profiles of people with whom they they are intellectually unable to have a civil disagreement. Often, those same people resort to childish name calling. Yes, 102 comments, and counting. I've been on these forums for months because I can disagree with someone and express my point of view without having to speak like an elementary school bully. Hope you enjoyed your time here, I'm willing to be it's short-lived.

@Canadianman16, I totally agree that I am biased in my views, in that I am supportive of Wind. I think it's essential that a new national carrier come on board. Even if one chooses not to go with them, it only helps everyone. Despite my "bias" I would like to think that I've treated everyone with respect on this forum, and given legitimate reasons why I say what I say. I am sure on occasion I may have been overly sarcastic, but I know for a fact, I have never resorted to the type of name calling this new user ...

I don't think that's right BlueAnt, though I stand to be corrected. My understanding is, if you are outside a Wind home zone, your calls are 25 cents/minute total even if they're LD. Like I said, I may certainly be wrong on that but that's how I interpreted Chris' latest blog entry.
