Question

Can I use the Internet on any WIND Phone?

Answer

All WIND phones are ready to browse from the get-go. All the mobile apps you want and need will work with WIND’s internet service: just check which ones are compatible with your phone.

You can get mobile internet access on your WIND phone in one of two ways, whichever you prefer:

  1. Pay per use: Best if you access the internet only occasionally on your phone, i.e. check a couple of internet pages each day. There’s no need to activate anything, all WIND phones come ready to browse.

  2. Add it to your monthly plan: You can combine any of our 3 add-ons with any voice+text plan, on any of our phones. Social gets you 50MB for $10/month, Charged is 500MB for $20/month, and Infinite offers unlimited data for just $35/month. You can combine any of these add-ons with any voice+text plan, on any of our phones.

Question

How much is 1MB? How can I tell how much data I need?

Answer

A single MB equals 1024 KB. In simple English, here's an example of what each of our data add-ons can be used for:

A single MB equals about 1024 KB.

In simple English, here's what you'll get with each of our data add-ons:

Social Mobile - 50 MB will let you do ALL the following in any WIND Zone

• 50 emails (text only) per day

• 2 email with attachments per day

• browse 5 web pages per day

• stream 5 minutes of m.youtube.com each week

• download 2 songs or applications per month

Charged Mobile - 500 MB will let you do ALL the following in any WIND Zone

• 100 emails (text only) per day

• 5 emails with attachments per day

• browse 50 web pages per day

• stream 15 minutes of m.youtube.com each week

• download 10 songs or applications each month

Of course these are just examples, you could also write very short emails and watch lots of YouTube or browse a bunch as your only activity.

Infinite Mobile - Unlimited!

Question

What limitations are there to using the Internet on a WIND Phone?

Answer

Our data add-on services are designed for people using their phone to access the internet. That means they're optimized for mobile applications, mobile websites, mobile email, things like: • web browsing

• email, including Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and other IMAP, POP3, and SMTP-based email

• streaming - both HTTP-based streaming & RTSP-based streaming consumer applications like Facebook, Twitter, Google Maps, VOIP, Skype, Jabber, Yahoo Messenger, MSN and Fring, plus whatever other consumer applications are to come!

• tethering

• other applications that use SIP, SSH, VPN and FTP

• if there are any other applications you would like to use but cannot seem to access, give us a call at 1-877-946-3184 (1-877-WIND-184) or 611 from your WIND phone. You can also email us here www.windmobile.ca/care

The speed at which you experience any of the above services will be depend on many factors, including the phone you are using.

Peer to Peer/File sharing applications are only accessible with our Infinite Laptop plan that comes with our Huawei E181 Data Stick

On Blackberry® Bold™ 9700 there are a few ins and outs for you to know:

  • Social BlackBerry does not include access to browse the internet but it does offer unlimited access to Instant Messaging, MySpace and Facebook.
  • If you're using your BlackBerry with a voice plan only, you can only browse the internet via WiFi or on a Pay-per-use Basis using the WAP browser.

Question

Can I really use as much Internet as I want with your Infinite add-ons – you won’t cut me off?

Answer

Nope, we won’t cut off your Internet access, no matter how much you use your Infinite Mobile or Infinite BlackBerry data add-ons – well not never... if you download a gazillion megabytes of data we might disconnect you, but it would have to be a really extreme situation. We just want to keep things fair for all our customers, so we have a Fair Usage Policy. Our Fair Usage Policy is that if you exceed 5GB of data usage within any given month, we may slow your speed so that all Customers can better share the network and enjoy quality access to the Internet – we won’t cap your usage or charge you more. This will likely only happen if you use file sharing software or download large files from the Internet. Media streaming contributes to the use of bandwidth and may, if left permanently on, inadvertently drive usage beyond 5GB in a month. Social and Charged customers get 50MB and 500MB in their add-ons, respectively, and will be charged for overage at a pay-per-use rate.

Question

Can I receive or send emails on my phone?

Answer

You can receive or send emails on any WIND phone. If you do it often a data add-on probably make sense for you - the only exception is Social BlackBerry. If you subscribe to the Social BlackBerry add-on you can receive email notifications from MySpace™ and Facebook® only.

Question

What happens if I don’t use all the data in my add-on each month?

Answer

Every month (on your billing date) you start with a new bucket of data. Unused data does not roll-over from one month to the next.

Question

What happens if I go over the data amount in the add-on?

Answer

You can check your usage online via My Account to keep track of how much data you've used so far each month.

If you use more data than you get with your add-on, you'll be charged an overage rate per MB. For Social Mobile every additional Megabyte is 20c/MB and for Charged Blackberry/Mobile you'll be charged 4c/MB in any WIND Zone. At this time, we don't have any caps on overage data charges.

Think you're at risk of going over your monthly MBs? No worries, you can change your data add-on at any time by calling our care centre (611 from your WIND phone). You don't have to wait until the end of your billing cycle - we'll make the change for you at any time during the month and will charge you a pro-rated amount for the amount of time you had the add-on. Be sure to call us before you incur overages if you need to upgrade to larger add-on. You can only make this change once a month though.

Question

If I have a data add-on, can I tether my phone to my laptop?

Answer

If you have a mobile data add-on (see our BlackBerry smartphone options here), you can use your phone's internet connection to get your laptop online (aka "tethering") with most WIND phones.

When you tether your phone, your internet access will work the same as it does through your device -- you won't have any usage caps and the connection will be optimized for the mobile web.

Question

How do I tether my BlackBerry Bold 9700 to my laptop?

Answer

If you have a data add-on, you can tether your BlackBerry and your internet access will work the same as it does on your phone. Your connection will be optimized for the mobile web. Other BlackBerry Customers can also use their phone to tether, but will be charged the pay-per-use data rate.

You can tether using a USB cable or via a Bluetooth Connection. We recommend that you tether using a USB cable as connections speeds are considerably faster; it’s also easier to set-up and use.

To tether using a USB cable, first you'll need to launch BlackBerry® Desktop Manager on your computer. If you do not have BlackBerry Desktop Software installed, visit the BlackBerry site to learn more and download the free software.

Then, connect Your BlackBerry to your laptop using the provided USB cable.

Now you'll need to add a new internet connection in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager:

  1. Select IP Modem from the Main Screen of BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

  2. Choose Configure under Connection Settings.

  3. Choose Add Custom Profile and select a name such as WIND Mobile Canada.

  4. Enter internet.windmobile.ca as the APN. All other fields can be left blank. Select OK.

  5. Choose Connect under Connect to Internet.

To tether via a Bluetooth connection. follow the step by step directions provided here. This method is great when you are in a pinch without your USB cable, but expect slower connection speeds and a few extra techie steps for getting set-up.
